Usually everyone who tries can take off and land the drone. But the questions arise at the time when the drone is lifted in the air: what to focus on? How to handle it properly? What to do if the drone does not move or flies away?
Learn the rules of air traffic and learn to pilot a drone! The training program is created for the participants to acquire the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills. To make everyone feel safely and confidentially when starting his/her first individual flights.
History
How it all started – the first use of UAV in the history, aircraft development and technological preconditions.
Unmanned aerial vehicle (drone)
How it all started – the first use of UAV in the history, aircraft development and technological preconditions.
Command and control
UAV control devices and peculiarities of their use.
UAV manufacturer’s manual
Essential technical characteristics of the UAV, collision of reality and theoretical possibilities.
Legal framework
Discussion of the EU and national legal framework – which UAV may I fly, what is the distance to the persons not participating in the flight or environmental objects, what are the responsibilities of the pilot and the operator?
Airspace
What are the elements of the airspace structure and where to find them? Where, with whom and in what altitude may I fly? What are the permanent restrictions in Latvian airspace? What are temporary restrictions and how they are conveyed to the airspace users?
Human factor
The limits of human capabilities and their impact on flight safety. How to assess your ability to perform a safe flight? What are the key threats arising out of our abilities and peculiarities of perception?
Environmental conditions
Impact of weather, terrain and anthropogenic factors on flight safety.
Procedures
Standard procedures, emergency procedures, UAV inspection before and after the flight, and maintenance thereof. What to do if the UAV stops obeying the commands? What to do when the situation becomes dangerous for other airspace users or those on the ground? Fail-safe settings and their operation.
Practical tasks during the training
Identification of UAV technical characteristics, identification of airspace restrictions and necessary approvals, finding and analysis of temporary restrictions.
Test of theoretical knowledge
Equivalent to the examination (test) at the CAA.
Before and after the flight activity – the participants of the courses under the supervision of an instructor perform a flight site inspection, assess the flight conditions, possible obstacles, prepare the take-off and landing area, prepare the UAV for the flight and other activities.
Emergency action – based on the knowledge acquired in the theoretical part, to plan and discuss with the instructor how to act in emergency situations.
Introduction to the UAV remote program – the participants of the courses learn general information on the range of functions and settings of the specific UAV remote program that are necessary for the flight.
Practical training "Flight" – includes demonstration of the piloting tasks defined by the CAA (equivalent to the practical examination at the CAA) and piloting of the UAV itself.

We want all drones of JSC “Latvijas valsts meži” to be piloted safely and legally
The forest is a complex environment. Almost every flight can become a high-risk flight within the meaning of regulatory environment, because in order to gather the necessary information the drone often needs to leave the area of direct vision.Such flights require a special permit, while the remote pilot has to be qualified to do them successfully.
The JSC “Latvijas valsts meži” remote pilot training program organised by LMT continued between the period from mid-February to mid-May 2020, including a short break due to emergency situation. Within this program LVM employees in the groups of eight acquired a two-day theory course. Also the specialists without prior knowledge had the opportunity to acquire the basic practical skills needed to pilot a drone.
This training can be assessed as successful - 59 employees completed the courses, at least 30 of them at the Civil Aviation Agency have already passed the theoretical test of the remote pilots required by law on their first try and are entitled to operate an unmanned aerial vehicle in unmanned aerial vehicle flights of increased risk (total risk classes: I and II).
